Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has asked the Witness Protection Agency to place all of his witnesses against Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho under the witness protection program.
In a letter dated January 29,2021,the govenor, through one of his lawyers claims that he has abundant evidence against the PS on how he helped stage manage election related violence in 2017.
Interestingy Sonko’s letter, later prompted the PS to challenge his intentions to table evidence; he secured court orders stopping Sonko from giving any evidence that links him to criminal activities.
This came a few days after the governor,in a separate letter to the PS, warned that he was ready to file evidence of how Kibicho was involved in stage managing violence in opposition rallies in Nairobi during the 2017 campaigns
Sonko now argues that the PS is determined to interfere with the evidence which he says is available both in audio and video.
” Our client claim to have abundance of evidence against the Interior National Coordination Principal Secretary Mr. Karanja Tobiko. In view of the nature and sensitivity of the case, we request that as a matter of urgency, our clients be placed under witness protection Program.” Reads the letter obtained by the Times.
Sonko was scheduled to appear before the Director of Criminal Investigations ( DCI) on Monday 1st February 2021 but will now not appear following the court order.
Kibicho had earlier on asked Sonko to “prepare the best lawyers” ahead of the court case but the ex-governor, known for his love for court cases, promised to avail himself when needed.
The governor has further asked the PS to demonstrate that he had stepped aside from his duties when he went to record a statement at the DCI offices. He argues that it is wrong for Kibicho to use public resources when fighting personal battles.
‘‘Indeed you used your offices at Harambee House to hold a press conference that was meant to advance your individual agenda to intimidate and threaten the governor contrary to the principles of openness, transparency and accountability. It is pretentious to state that you went to the DCI as Karanja Kibicho whereas all the state apparatus assigned Principal Secretary accompanied you with a specific intent to intimidate the DCI to harass the Governor, this is not acceptable in a democratic society,”
Through one of his lawyers, the Former Nairobi governor accused Kibicho of high-handedness and undermining the dignity of the office he holds.
