Foundational Learning Crisis To Be Ended In Our Generation

Zizi Afrique Foundation has today kicked off a regional convening to talk about Foundational Learning & Numeracy in Sub-Saharan Africa in association with the British Council, the Education Development Trust, Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel , and Education Evidence for Action .

With the theme “Delivering stronger foundational learning for all children post Covid-19”, estimates suggests that the economic cost of lost learning from the Covid-19 crisis will run into trillions of US dollars if corrective action is not urgently taken. While many other sectors have rebounded when lockdowns eased, the damage to children’s education is likely to reduce their wellbeing and productivity.

Speaking during the event event, Zizi Afrique foundation, executive director, Dr John Mugo called upon everyone especially the youths to take part in providing solution in helping a child learn.

” Government cannot solve the learning crisis alone. It will take all of us to combine efforts to provide solutions to low learning outcome.” Said Dr. Mugo.

CAS of education, Dr. Sarah Ruto pointed out on three things to bring back urgency & act on foundation learning. She said that developing a foundational learning strategy with a common vision, investing more in measurements and inverse the reporting and focusing deeper on equality will help end foundational learning crisis in our generation.

“We need to give our children an education which will enable them to not only thrive in their villages, but to be able to cross borders and thrive as global citizens.” she added

Dr Mugo further stated that we must fix the foundation of learning first before everything else, for an education system that works for all benefits all.

“With the emerging trends in education, it is important to become innovative while also partnering with other agencies which will help actualize new ideas, thereby creating more impact.” He said
