Kenya Kwanza plans to rig the 2027 general elections
The government is planning to rig the 2027 general election through single-handedly reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) commissioners.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga pointed out the government has excluded all other stakeholders in the process of reconstituting IEBC commissioners with a hidden agenda ahead of the 2027 polls.
He reiterated the government forced out former IEBC commissioners popularly referred to as the Cherera four to enable it embark on the process of single-handedly carrying out the exercise or reconstituting the electoral body.
‘We called for reform and reconstitution of the IEBC in consultation with all players on board,’ he added.Raila called for conducting a review and forensic audit of the records of the IEBC before, during and after the 2022 presidential election.
He spoke during Azimo Parliamentary Group meeting in Machakos County.
Azimio leader further called for review on the appointment and dismissal of IEBC Commissioners and including their tenure of office.
Raila said he recommends institutional, policy, legal, and constitutional mechanisms and reforms of the IEBC, including its Secretariat.
He proposed consideration whether elections should be devolved to counties, the composition of the IEBC, and the need for a permanent IEBC.
‘I wish reiterate three important points. One, as J.F. Kennedy said, “Civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof,’ he pointed out.
Former Prime Minister said there is a proper constitutional review to cure the governance defects in the 2010 constitution and remove the last vestiges of an imperial presidency.Raila has assured President William Ruto’s administration that the dialogue with the government will be open on the table.
He insisted they are demanding for a complete audit of the IEBC servers and calling for consultations as they reject the 2022 election results.
‘The illegitimate regime it produced,’ he added.
