Corporate World Challenged To Support Special School Games As Regional Games Continue In Busia
By Isabella Maua
The corporate world and other stakeholders have been challenged to step up and support the special school county and regional games that are going on in Mundika, Busia.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of Bungoma County Special School games at Kapsokwony Primary School during the weekend, Martin Wambete, school head at Kaptola Special School and also the treasurer of Bungoma County Special Games and Sports, observed that they have not received any support or aid from the corporate world.
“We would like to express our gratitude to all the participating sub counties, especially the host, Mt. Elgon; however, it is disappointing that we did not attract many people, especially the corporate world, like companies and banks, that would have come out in large numbers if it were the able-bodied students’ games,” he bemoaned.
Geoffrey Khakina, the chairman of Special Needs Education in the county, divulged that 12 out of 13 sub counties participated in the competitions, with all disciplines represented.
“We have had all disciplines, from the visually and hearing impaired to the physically and mentally handicapped, competing against each other in different games like football, handball, netball, and volleyball, as well as smaller games for the visually impaired,” said Khakina.
He further observed that the competition was very high as compared to the previous years, with the attendance also being remarkably larger, with over 350 participants.
“So far, we have selected a team of over 80 students to represent Bungoma County in Mundika and Lwanya Special Schools in Busia for the regional games there, and the winning teams will proceed to Kericho for the nationals,” added Khakina.
Nyakiruma Joseph, Curriculum Support Officer, Mt. Elgon Sub County, who was the host of the events, noted that, compared to the previous competitions, they have raised their standards and hope to hold more competitions in the future.
Nancy Laibuch, a teacher at Kaptola Special School, confirmed that the selection panel was a transparent and fair team, and she has faith in the chosen team, which will represent the county in Busia.
