Gov’t Determined to Ensure Passengers Move Seamlessly – Transport PS
Transport Principal secretary Mohamed Daghar said the government is determined to continue ensuring passengers move seamlessly throughout the country.
He further said the government has started with the Capital City of Nairobi and the city of Mombasa and other major cities.
“The old railway line moves a distance of 2,440 kilometers through most parts of the country,” he disclosed.
Daghar announced the government is also determined to ensure they extend the railway line to Naivasha and Kisumu city and 160 kilometers to Malaba to connect to Uganda.
He made the remarks during the commissioning 20 new passenger coaches in Mombasa county.
The Transport Principal secretary sought to put the record straight that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is not a Kenyan but a regional project all the way to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Daghar told the forum from 2017 the government has managed to move 12 million passengers.
He disclosed the government strategic plan 2023 to 2027 has a target of 8.8 million passengers annually.
“That means we must move over 6 million passengers annually through the commuter rail line,” he disclosed.
