Calls for Intervention as Kenyan Faces Execution in Vietnam

Kenyan government, including President William Ruto and several senators, are being urged to intervene diplomatically to have Margaret Nduta Macharia, a Kenyan woman scheduled for execution in Vietnam for drug trafficking, repatriated and tried under Kenyan law.
Nduta, convicted on March 6 for trafficking two kilos of cocaine, is now facing execution, likely by lethal injection. She was arrested in July 2023 while traveling to Laos.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has written to President William Ruto, asking him to intervene and have the 37-year-old repatriated to Kenya and charged.
”Margaret Nduta Macharia is a Kenyan, and it would be correct if she was repatriated back to the country to be tried within our laws over the crimes that she is being accused of.
The President should have have already made a personal effort in his capacity to initiate diplomatic negotiations with Vietnam leadership concerning a matter that is involving a Kenyan Citizen,” Senator Onyonka said.
Vietnam has some of the strictest drug laws in the world, and anyone caught smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or cocaine faces the death penalty. The Asian country is a key transit point for narcotics, making it a high-risk area for drug-related crimes.
