PLP Boss Karua Condemns Tanzania’s Tundu Lissu Arrest, Treason Charges

SC Marha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), has condemned the arrest and treason charges against Tanzanian Opposition leader Tundu Lissu by the country’s courts.

In a social media post on X, Karua described Lissu’s arrest as unacceptable, especially in an election year.

”Release Tundu Lissu. This is an unacceptable repression of competition in an election year,” Karua wrote.

Tundu Lissu, the chairman of the leading opposition party CHADEMA, has been holding rallies nationwide in recent weeks under the slogan “No Reforms, No Election” to call for reforms in the way the election will be run.

According to Chadema, Tanzania’s main opposition party, Lissu was arrested on Wednesday shortly after he concluded addressing a public rally.

President Samia Suluhu’s government has been accused of targeting opposition figures ahead of the national elections set for later this year.
