President William Ruto on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, hosted a section of political leaders from Murang’a County at State House, Nairobi, days after his five-day Mt Kenya tour.
The head of state, in a statement shared via his official social media accounts, said that he was encouraged by the commitment of the said political leaders to work together with him to deliver on his administration’s development plan.
The meeting was attended by Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, nominated MP Sabina Chege, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, his Mathioya counterpart Edwin Mugo, and Maragua’s Mary Wamaua.
However, conspicuously missing was Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, a close ally of the president whose relationship with his boss has faded. Nyoro, who was replaced from the powerful Budget and Appropriations Committee by Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi, also skipped the president’s Mt Kenya tour, revealing the silent war between the MP and President Ruto.
Speaking at the launch of the shadow budget for the 2025–2026 financial year by the Institute of Public Finance, Nyoro distanced himself even further from the government by criticizing the executive’s integrity in managing the economy, specifically the national debt.
“We are almost at a cliff in terms of debt repayment … you cannot tinker figures for too long, it catches up with you when it is time for repayment. The country is edging dangerously close to default. Any indication that we are unable to service our loans is more catastrophic to our economy,” Nyoro warned.
Nyoro also criticized the government’s aggressive tax regime, saying it has backfired on the economy.
“Increasing taxes to get more revenue is a fallacy. You end up distorting economic decisions. People stop spending and investing—and that means even the little revenue you hoped to raise never materializes.”
The Kiharu MP has re-emerged as a vocal critic of the Ruto administration, and his latest remarks expose a widening rift between the MP and the president.
