Zelensky: I Will Meet Putin in Turkey on Thursday to Push for Ceasefire

In a significant development that could shape the future of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday , May 11, 2025, his intention to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkey later this week. The meeting, set for Thursday, is expected to focus on establishing a full and lasting ceasefire and reviving diplomatic efforts to end the war.
Speaking during a televised address, President Zelensky emphasized the urgency of halting the violence and expressed hope that this meeting would mark a turning point.
“We are waiting for a ceasefire from tomorrow a full and long ceasefire to give the necessary basis for diplomacy. There’s no point in dragging out the killing. And I will be waiting for Putin on Thursday in Turkey. Personally. I hope that the Russians this time will not look for reasons why they can’t,” Zelensky stated.
This anticipated face-to-face meeting comes amid growing international pressure for a negotiated solution to the war that has taken a heavy toll on both sides. It would be one of the most direct diplomatic engagements between the two leaders since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
While the Kremlin has not yet confirmed Putin’s attendance, analysts see Zelensky’s invitation as a bold diplomatic overture. Turkey, which has maintained relations with both nations and previously hosted negotiations in 2022, is considered a neutral venue for dialogue.
Global observers and citizens alike now wait with cautious optimism, hoping this proposed meeting may finally lay the groundwork for peace.
