Cleophas Malala, the newly unveiled deputy party leader of DCP, Nyandarua Senator John Methu and Kiambu Senator Karung’o Thang’wa were among leaders caught up in a confrontation between the police and supporters of the newly unveiled political party’s first rally in Kakamega county.

On Friday, May 23, 2025, the party announced that the Kakamega rally was planned as a homecoming for the former senator, who had just been appointed the new deputy party leader.

The melee saw police throw teargas inside Malala’s vehicle before one of its tyres was deflated by one of the police officers, forcing Malala to jump on a motorbike to run for his safety.

Trouble started when youths forced their way into Kakamega town, later engaging police in running battles and a cat-and-mouse game in town.

“I want to urge my people to ensure we join the party so that we can liberate those who have been sidelined, neglected and mistreated for many years. We have had opposition, and we are aware that ODM leader Raila Odinga has been bought and he is in the government,” Malala said.

The leaders have criticised President Ruto, saying Kenya has become  a police state.
