In a resounding diplomatic victory, Kenya has secured a coveted seat on the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Council, an influential body tasked with shaping global tourism policy. The announcement was made during the UNWTO General Assembly, where Kenya emerged victorious after a tightly contested vote against several other high-profile candidates from across the globe.
This achievement marks a significant step for Kenya’s global positioning in the tourism sector, reinforcing the country’s status not just as a premier travel destination, but also as a leader in international tourism governance and strategy. The Executive Council plays a key role in guiding UNWTO’s programs, approving budgets, and shaping recovery and growth plans for a sector still rebounding from the pandemic’s impact.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, who led Kenya’s delegation, hailed the win as “a historic moment for Kenya and Africa.” Speaking shortly after the vote, Mutua emphasized the opportunity for Kenya to influence key decisions on sustainable tourism, regional cooperation, and equitable travel development. “We now have a seat at the table where the future of global tourism is shaped,” he said.
Kenya’s bid highlighted its strides in sustainable tourism, community-based ecotourism models, and digitization of travel services, all of which resonated with member states eager to see inclusive and climate-conscious growth.
As a council member, Kenya will advocate for policies that support developing countries, enhance regional tourism corridors across Africa, and ensure that global tourism rebounds with resilience and fairness. This win not only boosts Kenya’s tourism diplomacy but also promises greater visibility and investment opportunities for its tourism sector, which remains a key pillar of the national economy.
With this new role, Kenya is poised to help steer a global industry toward a more inclusive and sustainable future.
