National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on stakeholders and sponsors to invest in the growth of Kenyan football so as to positively impact the country’s youth.
In a statement when he spoke during an engagement with newly elected officials of AFC Leopards, Wetang’ula fulfilled his Sh1 million pledge to the club as part of efforts to bolster the team’s on-field performance and financial stability.
“I encourage the leadership to strengthen and grow the club so that it competes not just nationally, but also internationally. This includes attracting top talent, nurturing young players and expanding opportunities for the youth,” said the Speaker.
AFC Leopards CEO Ronald Namai echoed the Speaker’s sentiments, stating that the club is prioritising grassroots development to rejuvenate its squad and improve its competitiveness in the upcoming season.
“Our immediate focus is to recruit quality players, especially from the ongoing school games where we’ve deployed scouts, as well as from other teams. Our goal is to assemble a squad capable of winning the league,” Namai said.
In addition to player recruitment, the club is undertaking initiatives to modernise its kits, enhance player performance and expand its national footprint through new branches aimed at increasing fan engagement.
During a gala dinner held in Bungoma over the weekend, Speaker Wetang’ula urged fellow Members of Parliament to revisit the Sports Act.
He advocated for a provision that would allocate a portion of the Sports Fund directly to local clubs struggling to stay afloat.
“I was proud to fulfill mySh1 million pledge to support AFC Leopards’ revitalisation strategy,” he said.
The Speaker also called on Kenyans to turn up in large numbers to support the Harambee Stars as they face the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) this Sunday at the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani, in the opening match of the CHAN tournament.
“Our long-standing ambition to host major international football events is becoming a reality, with Kenya co-hosting the CHAN tournament alongside Tanzania and Uganda. Let’s unite and support the Harambee Stars as they fight for victory,” said Wetang’ula.
Extending his best wishes to the national team, he expressed confidence in their ability to deliver a memorable performance.
“A win will not only give us bragging rights but also improve our chances of advancing in the tournament. To the players, I urge you to play with heart, strength and skill. Let’s light up Kasarani and give our fans a match to remember,” he said.
Also in attendance were AFC Leopards Chairman Mr. Boniface Ambani, Dagoretti North MP Hon. Beatrice Elachi, Kanduyi MP Hon. John Makali, Ikolomani MP Hon. Bernard Shinali, Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli and other club officials.
