Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to expect major traffic disruption on Thursday August 7, as Kenya hosts another round of fixtures in the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a traffic advisory, Joseph Chirchir, the Officer Commanding Traffic in Nairobi County, announced that several key roads would be closed and diversions put in place to ease movement around the city, particularly near the match venues: the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani and the Nyayo National Stadium.

Affected roads include:

Aerodrome Road: closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout-Lang’ata Road: one side closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout.

Mombasa Road: one side closed from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.

These closures aim to facilitate the smooth movement of fans, players and officials while ensuring security during this high-profile tournament.

Alternative routes are suggested:

Motorists on Mombasa Road heading to the Central Business District (CBD) should use the Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.

Those on Lang’ata Road are advised to divert via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at the Mbagathi roundabout.

Motorists heading from the CBD to Thika, Ruiru or Juja should use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.

Matatus carrying fans to Kasarani Stadium should use the Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road and the Ngomongo Road to reach the Ngomongo Roundabout.

Those heading to the CBD from Thika Road are advised to use the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road or Limuru Road.

The police have strongly cautioned against using Thika Road unless you are heading directly to Kasarani Stadium.

This traffic plan forms part of the comprehensive logistical arrangements put in place to ensure the successful hosting of CHAN 2024, with thousands of fans and dignitaries expected to attend the matches.

Earlier, the Sports Cabinet Secretary, Salim Mvurya, assured fans that the government had put adequate measures in place to ensure seamless movement throughout the tournament. Traffic marshals will be deployed at major junctions to direct drivers and minimise congestion.
