A 23 – years – old woman who allegedly stabbed her baby daddy three times during a nearly fatal fight for the custody of their two years’ old son is facing charges of causing him grievous harm in contravention to section 234 of the Penal Code.
At the Makadara law court, Irene Wangui Macharia is accused of unlawfully causing the injuries to Keith Owino in Mihang’o within Embakasi East Sub County in Nairobi on July 17.
She had been warned by the court that the offence carries a stiffer penalty of up to life imprisonment and she should be careful at all times during the trial.
Ms Macharia was in her house when Owino visited to check on the child as they had divorced and were living separately.
The suspect did not object to the visit but everything changed after she discovered that her estranged husband had intentions of taking away the child.
A scuffle ensued between them after Owino placed the child on a motorbike and Ms Macharia was overpowered.
She allegedly went into the house and picked a knife and stabbed the complainant three times on the abdomen and grabbed the child after Owino surrendered, in pain.
Owino was taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital where he was admitted before he became unconscious following excessive bleeding on his abdomen. He regained consciousness the next day.
The complainant’s sister reported the matter to police when Owino was still in hospital where he was treated and the injuries listed as grievous. Owino was discharged from the hospital on July 22, 2025.
He later returned to the suspect’s home in search of his son who he found alone and took him away.
Ms Macharia later contacted him and they agreed to meet at the Kayole police station where she was arrested. The suspect denied the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Stephanie Bett.
She was released on a cash bail of Sh50, 000 and an alternative bond of Sh100, 000.
The case will be mentioned on October 9 for a pretrial.
