On Monday, 18 August, President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga will jointly chair a parliamentary group meeting, bringing together leaders from Kenya Kwanza and ODM.
The meeting aims to strengthen national unity, coordinate joint policies and review progress on the 10-point memorandum of understanding signed by the two parties in March.
The session will also review the work of the five-person technical committee responsible for overseeing the implementation of the MoU.
“On Monday, we are going to hold a government meeting with MPs from ODM and Kenya Kwanza to agree on robust mechanisms that will unite and propel the country forward,” President Ruto announced on Thursday in Migori during a meeting with grassroots leaders.
“ODM and Kenya Kwanza have agreed to work together to create a country for every Kenyan, and to develop policies that will generate more income for our nation,” he added.
Junet Mohamed, the National Assembly Minority Leader, confirmed the upcoming meeting, explaining that lawmakers would focus on critical issues for the country’s progress.
“We are going to discuss agendas that will take the country forward, including supporting communities affected by recent protests,” he said.
The technical committee overseeing the MoU is chaired by Agnes Zani and comprises Fatuma Ibrahim, Kevin Kiarie, Gabriel Oguda and Javas Bigambo.
A joint secretariat, co-led by executive secretaries from UDA and ODM, has been established to support the committee’s activities.
In a joint statement, Ruto and Raila emphasised that the committee will receive full funding and support from both UDA and ODM, and will conduct extensive and inclusive consultations with the public and all relevant stakeholders.
The consultations will include government departments, independent commissions, civil society groups, religious institutions and the private sector, in order to ensure that the MoU addresses the needs and aspirations of all Kenyans and reflects diverse perspectives.
The committee has already begun its work and is expected to submit progress reports to the two leaders every two months. Quarterly updates will also be presented to the joint Kenya Kwanza–ODM Parliamentary Group.
