FIFA President Gianni Infantino is scheduled to visit Kenya for the final match of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday, August 30.
He will be accompanied by Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe, along with presidents of all 54 African football associations. The event will take place at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, where Morocco will face Madagascar in a highly anticipated showdown.
Also expected in attendance are President William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, and Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed.
Infantino’s attendance at the game is set to add an extra level of importance to the 30-day tournament, which has provided entertainment and a sense of togetherness for the three co-hosts: Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
In the final, Morocco aim to secure a record-breaking third CHAN title, while Madagascar, the island nation, hope to complete its remarkable journey by winning its first-ever championship.
Morocco earned their place in the final by overcoming Senegal 5-3 in a penalty shootout during the semi-finals. Prior to that, they edged out one of the co-hosts, Tanzania, with a 1-0 victory in the quarter-finals. The North African team advanced to the quarters by finishing second in Group A, just behind Kenya, securing a top-two spot in the group stage.
On the other hand, Madagascar finished second to Tanzania in Group B to seal their spot in the quarter-finals. It later beat Kenya 4-3 in post-match penalties in heart-breaking fashion in the quarters to seal their spot in the semis.
The Barea later booked their spot in the finals by beating Sudan one-nil deep into extra time at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Before the final kick-offs, an elaborate closing ceremony is expected to be held, with spectators advised to make their way into the stadium at least three hours before the game starts.
