Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja may not be completely off the hook from the wrath of Nairobi MCAs.

This is after it emerged that President William Ruto told the legislators to keep the impeachment signatures in abeyance, subject to the governor’s commitment to fulfil all the conditions set for him.

President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga both led separate interventions with UDA and ODM MCAs, respectively, where the governor was given 60 days to fix the concerns raised lest the impeachment be triggered again.

While the ODM legislators appeared to have surrendered their agitation to the party bigwigs, their UDA counterparts were in a no-holds-barred mood, as the President set them free to vent their frustrations.

The President, according to the MCAs, was shocked by the gruelling revelations on the critical situation of unfolding events at City Hall despite persistent pronouncements by Governor Sakaja that the Capital City is on the right trajectory.

According to Nairobi South B MCA Chege Waithera, everything was put bare at point blank, with MCAs making it clear that Sakaja has completely lost his bearings, forgotten his manifesto and cares little about the fortunes of Nairobi voters.

“We didn’t mince our words and everyone spoke their minds with an overriding conclusion that the governor has lost touch with the people and the assembly,” she said

Lack of respect for MCAs

The President was told how the City boss disregards the Ward Representatives, hardly picks up their calls with the same spirit having been adopted by the County Executive Committee Members.

Some of the MCAs said the governor can only talk to them after a period of between 5-6 months, despite consistent efforts to reach out for interventions on ward-related challenges facing the people.

“The Governor has been telling anyone who cares to listen that he only responds to two people and that is the President and the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga,”

The idea of Sakaja working with rivals of the sitting MCAs ahead of the 2027 elections couldn’t help the situation. Nairobi Central Business District MCA Mwaniki Waihenya said the governor was the orchestra of his own trouble by making such a big mistake.

“We made it clear that the Governor is sabotaging our relationship and not helping himself at all,” he said.

Incompetent cabinet

The MCAs also feel that Governor Sakaja’s cabinet is full of self-serving individuals who know little about public service. The issue of the cabinet was also mentioned to ODM leader Raila Odinga in the Monday meeting with the county assembly leaders.

The MCAs want Sakaja to kick out some of the County Executives with the Health, Environment, Finance and Transport docket among those on the spotlight.

Sakaja not helping UDA

On the political front, some of the MCAs feel that the governor lacks the political firepower to help President Ruto marshal up the much-needed support in Nairobi.

” When do you ever see the governor on the ground, unless when the President is the one in control,” a nominated MCA who does not want to be victimised said.

Impeachment on hold

Shocked by the revelations of the MCAs, President William Ruto agreed that there are serious issues to be ironed out.

The President told the MCAs to only put the impeachment motion on hold pending the implementation of all the grievances raised.

The legislators demanded immediate disbursement of bursary funds, payment of all pending bills owed to contractors, understanding projects under the Ward Development Fund, commencement of all stalled projects and collection of all garbage in the 85 wards
