A 21-year-old man who allegedly set his mother’s house on fire and threatened to kill her for failure to serve him food at the right time is facing charges of issuing death threats.

Samuel Muchangi is accused of threatening to kill his mother, Catherine Wawira, at her house in Shranga Este, Njiru sub-county on October 3 contrary to section 223 (1) of the Penal Code.

Muchangi is also facing charges of malicious damage to property in contravention of section 339 (1) of the Penal Code.

The suspect is accused of destroying a bed, a mattress, three blankets, a chair, a table and assorted utensils all valued at Sh50, 000 belonging to his mother, after setting her house on fire.

He denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Kennedy Bindali of Makadara law courts and he was released on a bond of Sh80,000 and an alternative cash bail of Sh30,000.

Muchangi returned home at around 6pm and demanded supper but his mother told him that the food was not yet ready.

He is alleged to have uttered words “nitakuua” and a confrontation ensued before Wawira escaped unhurt during the incident and fled to seek help from neighbours.

While away, the accused person allegedly set the house on fire and the items were reportedly destroyed. Wawira raised an alarm and her son fled as members of the public gathered.

Wawira reported the matter at the Mowlem police station and police officers visited the scene of crime which is her home and arrested the suspect and escorted him to the station.

The case will be mentioned on November 3, 2025 before hearing starts on April 3, 2026.

The suspect’s mother who is the complainant in the case will testify together with her daughter who helped in putting off the fire.
