The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has convened an urgent review following a series of violence-marred by-elections that have left communities shaken and questions raised about electoral safety and transparency.
The by-elections, held across several constituencies last week, were disrupted by clashes between supporters of rival candidates, resulting in injuries, arrests, and reports of ballot tampering. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes at polling stations, with physical confrontations forcing some officials to suspend voting temporarily.
In response, IEBC chairperson called an emergency meeting with commissioners, security agencies, and political stakeholders to examine the causes of the unrest and to determine measures to prevent a repeat in upcoming polls. “We are committed to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections,” the commission said in a statement. “We will leave no stone unturned in understanding what went wrong.”
Political analysts warn that the incidents could undermine public confidence in the electoral process and fuel tensions ahead of the next general elections. Community leaders and civil society groups have urged the commission to act swiftly, emphasizing the need for enhanced security, voter education, and accountability for those involved in violent acts.
As the review continues, IEBC faces mounting pressure to restore trust among voters and political actors alike. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the commission can reassure Kenyans that future elections will be conducted without fear, intimidation, or disruption.
