Kenya’s legal fraternity is set for a major shakeup after the Law Society of Kenya’s Committee on Senior Counsel recommended 54 top advocates for conferment of the prestigious Senior Counsel title—commonly known as “silk.”
The list features some of the country’s most recognisable legal and political heavyweights, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, former Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana, and renowned constitutional lawyer PLO Lumumba.
Committee chair Senior Counsel Philip Murgor said the team reviewed 105 applications submitted after the September call, evaluating each based on professional standing, integrity, and contribution to the advancement of the legal profession.
“After a thorough review, the committee has recommended these advocates for conferment based on merit and service,” Murgor confirmed.
Also making the cut are Solicitor General Noordin Haji, Deputy Senate Speaker Nelson Havi, and seasoned litigator Katwa Kigen, among several distinguished figures from academia, public service, and private practice.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo said the rank represents more than prestige:
“It recognises exceptional skill, dedication, and leadership. It sets a benchmark for the next generation of advocates.”
The Committee draws membership from the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, Attorney General’s office, LSK, and sitting Senior Counsel to ensure rigorous, multi-institutional assessment.
The recommendations have now been forwarded to the Chief Justice and the Attorney General, who will carry out the formal conferment as required under the 2011 Senior Counsel Rules.
