Talanta Sports City is set to broaden its scope beyond hosting sports events, with plans underway for a 300-room four-star hotel and a major shopping mall.
The developments are part of a wider vision to make the venue a leading destination for sports, entertainment, and large-scale gatherings.
New details reveal the hotel will occupy three acres of Kenya Forest Service land, while the mall will take up four acres. The shopping mall will provide at least 30,000 square metres of lettable space, catering to tenants across retail, dining, and entertainment sectors.
Kenya Forest Service says these facilities represent the first phase of supporting infrastructure for Talanta Sports City, which is nearing completion.
The sports city is being designed to host both national and international tournaments, as well as cultural and community events. The stadium itself will seat 60,000 spectators and is financed through a securitised bond.
Its first major event will be hosting the 2027 African Cup of Nations.
Kenya Forest Service is calling on qualified developers to handle the design, financing, construction, operation, and transfer of the hotel and mall.
The projects will be situated along Ngong Road, near Nairobi National Park. The successful developer will receive a 40-year special-use licence.
“The special use licence shall confer on the successful bidder an exclusive right to occupy and utilise the specified parcel of KFS for the purposes of developing, financing, constructing and operating the 4-star hotel and shopping mall,” KFS said in a tender notice.
Hotels in Kenya are rated on a scale of one to five stars, managed by the Tourism Regulatory Authority, reflecting different service levels.
The four-star hotel will be the first of several planned facilities on the same land, acting as a benchmark for future developments.
The hotel will feature a variety of room types, including standard, deluxe, junior suites, executive suites, and family rooms.
KFS says the hotel and mall will set standards for design, operations, and sustainability for future projects, which may include hotels of other categories and sizes.
“It is envisioned that the hotel and the shopping mall will catalyse new demand for Talanta Sports City by offering modern hospitality services, enabling larger events and tournaments, and stimulating further investment within the same land parcel,” KFS said. “The hotel will provide a unique platform for athletes, officials, spectators, corporate guests, and tourists to access high-quality hospitality services directly within Nairobi’s premier sports destination,” the agency added.
KFS highlighted that the new facilities will meet growing demand for on-site accommodation and leisure options, especially for international sports participants, government officials, corporate visitors, and sports tourists.
Currently, high-end hotels and large retail centres are located several kilometres away from sports grounds, leaving participants and visitors with limited convenient options during events.
