The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested three traffic police officers from Sondu Police Station over allegations of soliciting and accepting bribes from motorists along the busy Kisumu–Kisii Highway.
The officers taken into custody on December 27 are Inspector of Police (IP) Rachel Wangetha, Corporal Wilberforce Koffi, and Corporal Shadrack Nerima.
The arrests follow a sustained operation by EACC investigators across the country, prompted by numerous complaints from motorists and members of the public about repeated extortion by traffic police officers on the roads.
During the operation, the officers were observed actively demanding bribes from helpless motorists, often without performing any vehicle inspections or enforcing traffic regulations.
Cash in various denominations, suspected to be proceeds of the vice, was recovered from the suspects at the time of arrest.
The officers were first processed at the EACC Central Nyanza Regional Office in Kisumu before being escorted to Kisumu Railways and Ports Police Station, where they were officially booked pending further investigations.
This action is part of the Commission’s broader, ongoing nationwide effort to curb bribery and corruption on major highways, particularly during periods of high traffic such as the festive season.
The EACC continues to strengthen intelligence gathering and surveillance, focusing on public services and sectors most vulnerable to corrupt practices, with the aim of promoting integrity and accountability.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing anti-corruption laws and urged the public to report any incidents of corruption through its official reporting channels.
