Heavy downpours will continue pounding several parts of the country from Tuesday, December 30, to Monday, January 5, the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has said.
In its forecast, the Weatherman has urged residents in the Highlands, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, North-eastern and Coastal regions to exercise caution as isolated thunderstorms and possible flooding may affect daily routines.
KMD said some regions may experience isolated thunderstorms alongside heavy rainfall, while other parts of the country will see mainly sunny and dry conditions.
Rainfall is expected across the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley region, the Lake Victoria Basin and north-western parts of the country. The north-eastern region, the Coast, and the south-eastern lowlands are also set to experience heavy downpours.
“Rains are expected to continue over a few areas at the beginning of the week, mainly in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the North-western and North-eastern regions, the Coastal region, and the South-eastern lowlands. Isolated thunderstorms and heavy rainfall may occur in these areas,” the forecast reads in part.
The department added that other areas are likely to experience predominantly sunny and dry conditions for the rest of the week.
Daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected in the coast, north-eastern and north-western Kenya, as well as parts of the south-eastern lowlands, the Rift Valley and western Kenya. Meanwhile, night-time temperatures below 10°C are forecast in parts of the Central Highlands, the North and Central Rift Valley, Western Kenya and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The warning follows a forecast issued a day earlier, predicting rainfall between Monday, December 29, and Tuesday, December 30. The Lake Victoria Basin, including Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori and Busia counties, were expected to receive moderate to locally heavy rainfall.
Parts of the Central Highlands, covering Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, and Kiambu counties, were also highlighted for rainfall. In the Rift Valley, showers were forecast in Nakuru, Baringo, Kericho, Nandi and sections of Narok, while the South Rift and adjacent areas, including Kajiado and Samburu, were expected to experience intermittent rain.
KMD urged residents in affected regions to take precautions against potential flooding and disruptions to daily activities due to the heavy rainfall.
