CCTV footage has emerged, shedding light on the recent confrontation between Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino and Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai.
The video provides a clearer view of the events that led to the reported scuffle at a restaurant in the Kilimani area in Nairobi on January 3, 2026.
The recording is currently being examined by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The events start around 4:01 pm, with the footage showing Babu Owino standing up from a first gazebo inside the restaurant and walking toward a second gazebo, where Robert Alai is seen to have been seated.
Alai was accompanied by six men, and the initial moments between Babu Owino and the group appeared friendly, with handshakes exchanged before tensions escalated.
Exactly 2 minutes and 32 seconds into the footage, the Kileleshwa MCA rises and begins shoving Babu, triggering a physical altercation as the Embakasi lawmaker attempts to defend himself.
The situation quickly escalates, and Alai immediately draws what looks like a firearm. This makes the onlookers scamper for safety, seemingly in fear of what might happen next.
At 4:09 pm, a female patron approaches the two in an attempt to calm the situation. The footage shows Alai turning toward the woman.
The confrontation moves to a third gazebo, where Alai seen throwing an object at Babu Owino. The Embakasi East lawmaker then gradually leaves the restaurant through gate 1.
However, despite the CCTV footage, the Kileleshwa representative has since denied any wrongdoing, dismissing claims that he brandished a gun at Babu.
“There was no instance where we drew guns at each other, as alleged, or where I drew a gun at him. I do not think that is a fair analysis of the situation,” Alai said during an interview on a local TV station on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The MP has accused Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai of physically assaulting him during an altercation at a restaurant along Lenana Road in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.
In a statement issued to the public on Sunday, January 4, 2026, Owino stated that the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at approximately 3:40 pm, when he had gone to meet a senior clergyman at the establishment.
According to the MP, he had released his security detail for the Christmas holidays and had driven himself to the venue. He said the meeting lasted about 20 minutes, after which he stood up to leave.
“As I was departing, I noticed a group of people known to me seated at an adjacent table. Out of courtesy, I approached the table and greeted those present, including the MCA for Kileleshwa Ward, Hon. Robert Alai,” Owino wrote in a Facebook press statement.
He claims that the encounter quickly turned hostile, alleging that Alai accused him of orchestrating social media attacks against his wife.
“Without provocation, he accused me of being behind alleged social media attacks on his wife. I calmly explained that I do not know his wife, that she has never wronged me in any way, and that I have no reason whatsoever to involve innocent family members in politics,” Owino stated.
Owino added that he does not target women in political disputes.
“It is not my style to advance my politics by attacking women. I hold our respected ladies in the highest regard.”
Owino claims that the MCA then became violent.
“At that point, Hon. Alai became aggressive, pushed me, drew a pistol, and struck me on the chest and jaw with it, all in full view of patrons at the establishment,” he said.
He further claimed that after a brief lull in the confrontation, the situation escalated again.
“Moments later, he again turned hostile, picked a glass of water from the table, and poured it on my face,” Owino stated, adding that a crowd had gathered by then.
Fearing further escalation, Owino said he left the restaurant and reported the matter at Kilimani Police Station.
“I then immediately left the premises and proceeded to Kilimani Police Station, where I reported the matter,” the statement read.
