The body of Samuel Macharia Wanjohi, a porter who went missing on Mt Kenya nearly three weeks ago, has been recovered by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) teams.

Wanjohi was located off the main trail in Hinde Valley on January 9, 2026, at an altitude of around 4,300 metres.

In a statement on Saturday, January 10, 2025, KWS said Wanjohi disappeared on December 23, 2025, while guiding trekkers along the Sirimon-Shipton route within Mt Kenya National Park.

Upon receiving the report, KWS immediately deployed its Mountain Search and Rescue Unit and lodged a formal report at Chogoria Police Station to coordinate the search.

The operation involved rangers, experienced rescuers, and aerial surveillance, covering key areas including Shipton Camp, Austrian Hut, Mackinder’s Valley, Sendeyo, Hinde Valley, Mintos, and the Timau Route.

Teams faced severe weather, difficult terrain, and low visibility during the search.

KWS worked closely with the National Police Service (NPS), local mountain guides, porters, and members of the community.

“Their courage, resilience, and solidarity were instrumental in the search efforts,” the service said, praising the teamwork that led to the recovery.

Following the discovery, KWS reiterated its commitment to protecting lives in Kenya’s mountain areas and enhancing emergency preparedness.

The service also extended heartfelt condolences to  Wanjohi’s family, fellow guides, porters, and the wider Mt Kenya community.
