Marya Prude has spoken candidly about her divorce from former TV host Willis Raburu, describing the highly publicised break-up as messy and emotionally draining.
In an episode of the Iko Nini podcast aired on Friday, January 9, 2026, Marya revealed that the divorce occurred at the height of the pandemic, when many people were constantly scrolling through social media in search of the latest trending stories.
She said that this made an already difficult situation even worse, especially since it happened shortly after they lost their child.
“It was messy because it happened during the time of the pandemic. People were on social media looking for entertainment, so they went online to find out what had happened. And all of this happened after we lost our child,” Marya stated.
Marya went on to say that the public scrutiny was overwhelming. She said that she could feel people staring at her and judging her wherever she went. Even her parents were not spared, receiving comments from people who claimed to have seen or heard things about her.
“It was so messy that even when I went out, people would stare at me. Even my parents got comments like ‘Mary, I know what you’re doing,’ and I felt bad for them being dragged into the whole thing,” she added.
Marya also explained that they initially separated, later attempting to save their marriage through therapy and conversations, but to no avail.
She said that at that point, they both realised that the relationship could not be saved.
“At the time, I thought we could work things out, but after we separated, we tried therapy and talking, but it did not work,” Marya explained.
The social media personality revealed that she was shocked to be served with divorce papers when she believed they were still trying to work things out.
She added that, although they were already separated, the move had still caught her off guard. However, upon receiving the documents, she said that she had immediately accepted the situation.
“I was served divorce papers when I thought we were working on it. I found out on WhatsApp, but we were separated at that time,” she revealed.
“When I received these documents, I said it was okay. That was my immediate attitude. I said, ‘Oh, we have parents, we have pastors.’ I was done.”
However, during her conversation with Willis, she found out that he had not fully come to that conclusion by the time he sent the papers.
“Later, I told him that I thought this story ended at irreconcilable differences, but he had not reached that point by the time he sent the papers,” she added.
Marya also disclosed that the divorce process became even more complicated after she filed a separate case, making her the petitioner, because she did not agree with the grounds given for the divorce. She added that the whole process took about a year.
‘It was messy because I filed a case as the petitioner because I did not agree with his grounds for divorce; I had my own grounds. For me, the grounds are very important. You should not just agree to a divorce because you want one,” she added.
“Divorce can take a very long time because of issues such as child custody and property, but we didn’t have those issues, and it still took a long time, more than a year.”
