The Ministry of sports in partnership with the Kenya Railways has unveiled an ambitious infrastructure overhaul of the Nairobi Commuter Rail service, aimed at providing a seamless transport solution for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
As part of the Pamoja bid alongside Uganda and Tanzania, Kenya is accelerating preparations to host the continental showpiece at three primary venues: Nyayo National Stadium, Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and the ultra-modern Talanta Sports City stadium.
In a press statement released on January 14, 2026, Kenya Railways Management detailed plans to construct a strategic railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium which has been designated as the central operations and training hub for the tournament.
Further, a new railway spur line will be developed, extending from Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo Stadium area and Kibera, eventually terminating at the Talanta Sports City stadium. The government has identified the Nairobi Central Station-Limuru Commuter corridor as the primary route for this development.
“This line will guarantee commuters a safe, reliableand affordable transport option,” the statement read, emphasizing that the project is critical to easing movement for thousands of local and international football fans.
The expansion comes with a stern warning to those occupying railway land. Kenya Railways confirmed it has begun the process of repossessing the designated corridors to pave way for construction.
Authorities noted that all encroachers had previously been issued notices to vacate. The Corporation warned that any illegal structures remaining on the identified land will be demolished at the encroacher’s risk and cost.
This follows repossession of land ignored for 6 years by the corporation including Kiambu Governor Wamatangi’s Douglas Wakiihuri Road premises yesterday night which has seen lose of properties worth millions shillings on the illegal occupants.
The rail project is a cornerstone of the Whole-of-Government approach to AFCON 2027. With Talanta Sports City currently at 66% completion and expected to open by February 2026, the integration of rail connectivity is seen as a vital step in meeting CAF and FIFA standards for world-class tournament hosting.
