Kenyan football fans are buzzing with excitement after Charlton Athletic confirmed the signing of 22-year-old centre-back Collins Sichenje from Serbian side FK Vojvodina. The towering 1.89m defender, who will wear the No. 28 shirt, joins the EFL Championship side as part of manager Nathan Jones’ plan to strengthen a defence that has struggled for consistency this season.
Jones described Sichenje as an “aggressive, technically gifted super athlete” and hinted that the Kenyan could make his debut in tonight’s home fixture against Queens Park Rangers. The manager praised the player’s physicality and composure, saying his arrival adds both depth and dynamism to the back line.
Sichenje’s move marks another milestone for Kenyan footballers breaking into European leagues. Having previously featured for AFC Leopards in the Kenyan Premier League before moving to Europe, his steady rise has made him a fan favourite back home.
On social media, Kenyan supporters have flooded Charlton’s pages with messages of support, humorously declaring the London club their new favourite English team. One fan wrote that Sichenje is “carrying an entire nation on his shoulders,” while others shared memes and flags celebrating his move.
As Charlton prepare for a crucial run of fixtures, all eyes in Kenya will be on The Valley, where one of their own is set to make his mark on English football.
