The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will prioritise coalition talks with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election before exploring other political options, the party has announced.
Party Leader Oburu Odinga on Wednesday said a solo presidential bid remains the last resort as political realignments intensify across the country. Speaking during an ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Mombasa, Oburu emphasised that the party’s immediate focus is on strengthening its internal structures to negotiate from a position of stability.
“As a party, we are not in a hurry to say one term or two term. We are strengthening our party to prepare ourselves for negotiations,” Oburu said.
He noted that the late Raila Odinga left ODM within a broad-based government framework and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to implementing the 10-point agenda agreed upon with its governing partners.
“In this broad-based government, we have our partners. We are continuing to work hard to fulfil the commitments and arrangements which brought us together,” he added.
Oburu’s remarks come amid internal wrangles within ODM and growing speculation over the party’s future political direction. The ruling UDA has in recent weeks moved to formalise its partnership with the Orange Party, signalling a possible coalition ahead of the next general election.
Political observers say the move could reshape Kenya’s political landscape, with ODM’s decision likely to influence broader alliances and power-sharing negotiations in the run-up to 2027.
