Six construction workers were rescued early Wednesday morning after a building under construction partially collapsed near the OTC area along Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. at the junction of Kirinyaga and Racecourse roads. According to witnesses, workers were installing the first-floor slab during overnight operations when part of the structure gave way, trapping several of them under debris.
Emergency response teams, including the Kenya Red Cross, Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC), and the Kenya Police Service, swiftly arrived at the scene to coordinate rescue efforts. In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed that all six trapped workers had been successfully pulled from the rubble.
“Six workers who had been trapped in the collapsed building have been successfully rescued. All individuals have now been accounted for,” the agency said.
Police and eyewitnesses reported that between 12 and 18 workers were present at the site when the collapse occurred. At least six sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Most are reported to be in stable condition, while one remains in intensive care.
Authorities sealed off the area to facilitate rescue operations and ensure no other individuals were trapped beneath the debris. Preliminary investigations suggest the collapse may have been caused by structural failure during active construction.
The incident has reignited concerns over compliance with building safety standards, supervision of night construction activities, and the quality of materials used in Nairobi’s fast-growing real estate sector.
