Ghanaian authorities have formally requested the extradition of a Russian national accused of secretly recording his sexual encounters with several women and distributing the videos online without their consent.
The man, identified by African and Russian media as a self-styled “pick-up artist” and online blogger in his thirties, allegedly travelled to Ghana to film his interactions with women using hidden cameras. Reports from both Ghanaian and Russian outlets claim he used a pair of sunglasses fitted with a concealed camera to record some of the encounters, later sharing the footage on social media platforms. Officials have not yet confirmed the specific details of the recordings or the technology used.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Ghana’s Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Sam George, said he had summoned the Russian ambassador to discuss the matter and ensure cooperation in the ongoing investigation. “We take this incident very seriously. It represents a grave violation of privacy and dignity, and we are working with international partners to ensure justice is served,” George stated.
The alleged videos have sparked outrage across Ghana, with women’s rights groups calling for stronger digital privacy protections and stricter enforcement of cybercrime laws. Legal experts have also urged authorities to pursue charges under Ghana’s Data Protection Act and Criminal Offences Act, which prohibit the non-consensual sharing of intimate content.
Russian authorities have not yet issued a public statement regarding the extradition request. However, diplomatic sources in Accra indicated that discussions between the two governments are ongoing.
The case has reignited debate over online exploitation and the responsibilities of social media platforms in curbing the spread of non-consensual content. Ghanaian officials have pledged to strengthen cross-border cooperation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
