Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Dr Davji Bhimji Atellah has dismissed reports that former Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Iqbal Khandwalla has stepped down voluntarily.
He argued they are currently trying to get facts to understand what led to his resignation.
“We don’t think that what the county government is saying is a fact,” he pointed out.
Atellah said they were prepared to go to court but they were informed by their counsel that their member has voluntarily stepped down.
He was responding to questions during an interview after a KMPDU meeting held outside CGTRH parking bar in Mombasa county.
The KMPDU Secretary General told the media the county government must shed more light on Dr. Khandwalla’s resignation.
Atellah said he suspects there is some monkey business going on in this fiasco.
He added that one could get threats with political intimidation which would force one to resign.
“We must be told what transpired leading to his resignation apart from the stories we are seeing on social media,” he pointed out.
The KMPDU Secretary General told the media the county government has left more questions than answers for their union.
Atellah said the union members require protection from their employers rather than a  political will from the political class.
He said the union members require a conducive working environment free from political interference.
“We want the political class to stop interfering with the medical practitioners’ work,” he  said.
The KMPDU Secretary General said they suspect Dr Khandwalla resigned under duress.
