For the second night in a row, Ukrainian forces have reportedly launched drone attacks targeting Moscow and its surrounding regions, according to Russian officials. The assaults mark a continuation of Kyiv’s strategy of taking the conflict closer to Russia’s heartland amid the ongoing war that has now entered its third year.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were intercepted overnight on May 5 into the early hours of May 6.

While most of the drones were reportedly shot down by air defense systems, local authorities in Moscow and adjacent areas noted some minor infrastructure damage, including broken windows and scattered debris in non-residential zones. No casualties have been reported at the time of publication.

“These drone attacks are a clear attempt to undermine our national security and provoke unrest,” stated Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. “Our defense forces acted swiftly and effectively to neutralize the threat.”

Ukrainian officials have not officially commented on the recent strikes, consistent with their usual policy of strategic ambiguity regarding attacks within Russian territory.

However, sources within the Ukrainian military, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggest the drone operations are part of a broader campaign to disrupt Russian military logistics and send a message of deterrence.

These developments come amid escalating tensions and increased cross-border skirmishes, as both nations brace for a summer of intensified combat operations.

Western analysts have noted the growing frequency and sophistication of Ukrainian drone capabilities, which have increasingly been used not only for surveillance but also for precision strikes deep inside Russian territory.

As the international community watches closely, concerns are rising over the potential for further escalation and the broader implications for regional stability.
