Tragedy struck Kitambo village in Central Asembo, Rarieda Constituency, Siaya County on 25 May, after a middle-aged man lost his life while attempting to make an illegal electricity connection.

The deceased, identified as George Omondi, was discovered lifeless, hanging from an electricity pole in what police and Kenya Power officials suspect was a failed attempt to tap power illegally.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, May 25, prompted a swift response from local authorities and Kenya Power personnel. Rarieda Sub-County Police Commander Fredrick Alata confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

“Preliminary findings suggest the deceased was attempting an unauthorized electrical connection when the tragic incident occurred,” said Alata. “However, we are conducting a thorough investigation to gather all relevant facts.”

George Omondi’s body was retrieved from the scene and taken to Bondo Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved awaiting a postmortem examination. His death highlights the growing concern over illegal electricity connections, which not only pose significant safety risks but also contribute to power losses and potential damage to the national grid.

Commander Alata used the opportunity to caution residents against engaging in unsafe electrical practices, urging them to consult certified professionals for all electricity-related work.

“This unfortunate incident could have been avoided. We strongly advise the public to adhere to safety guidelines and legal procedures when dealing with electrical infrastructure,” he said.

As rural electrification continues to expand in Kenya, authorities are calling for increased awareness and vigilance to prevent similar tragedies.
