Political heat is rising in Mt Kenya as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua makes a decisive move to reassert his influence in the region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Through his newly launched Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Gachagua is strategically positioning himself and his allies to challenge entrenched political forces and recapture the dominance once enjoyed by Jubilee and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

On Tuesday, June 3, Gachagua’s campaign is aggressively targeting current incumbents and rivals across Mt Kenya, aiming to build a loyal cadre of candidates under the DCP banner. Political analysts suggest this approach reflects his ambition to consolidate power by reviving the region’s political machinery with a fresh yet familiar appeal.

Publicly, Gachagua has not shied away from sharp rhetoric, accusing leaders aligned with President William Ruto of betrayal and urging voters to reject what he describes as “traitors” at the polls. His direct challenges have ignited fierce competition with established parties, notably Jubilee, the Service Party (TSP), and smaller regional outfits such as the Democratic Party and Chama Cha Kazi.

Jubilee remains a significant contender, buoyed by enduring grassroots support. The return of former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu to Jubilee underscores the tensions, as he openly criticized Gachagua’s attempt to dominate Mt Kenya politics. Meanwhile, TSP leader Mwangi Kiunjuri has cautioned against monopolizing the political landscape, emphasizing that leadership performance should outweigh party loyalties.

Behind the scenes, Gachagua is reportedly vetting candidates rigorously, seeking to replace perceived disloyal MPs and eyeing UDA offices for rebranding under the DCP flag. High-profile names like Peter Mwathi, Wambui Nyutu, and Wahome Thuku have already been floated for key seats.

Despite swirling speculation, Kirinyaga Senator James Murango has dismissed claims of predetermined endorsements, assuring the public of a level playing field for all contenders.

As Mt Kenya’s political factions sharpen their knives for the 2027 showdown, the battle for supremacy is clearly underway, promising a high-stakes contest that could reshape the region’s political future.
