Nairobi, Kenya – June 2025
Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital has emerged as a symbol of progress in Nairobi’s Eastlands, following years of investment, innovation, and leadership reforms. Once known for strained services, the public hospital has repositioned itself as one of the most technologically advanced healthcare institutions in Kenya—second only to Kenyatta National Hospital.
Under the stewardship of CEO Martin Wafula Wekesa, the hospital has digitized its operations, introduced patient data portals, and become a national model for public health infrastructure. The facility now supports real-time access to patient records, improving care coordination and clinical outcomes.
In a major recognition of its transformation, the Ministry of Health selected Mama Lucy to launch the distribution of 11,780 computers and tablets to health centres countrywide. The digital equipment rollout supports Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Taifa Care programme, following an intergovernmental agreement with county governments.
“We are proud to be at the centre of this healthcare revolution,” said CEO Wekesa. “This progress reflects our dedication to service delivery, digital health, and expanding critical care.”
Upgrades in Critical and Specialized Care
To match rising demand, Mama Lucy has expanded its capacity across multiple departments:
-
Six Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds
-
Eight Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) beds
-
A 14-bed renal unit for dialysis services
-
Six advanced operating theaters to boost surgical throughput
-
A modernized Accident & Emergency Unit
-
A Smart Blood Bank system to improve access to safe, timely transfusions
These improvements are already delivering results. Patient flow has increased, and wait times for critical care services have dropped significantly.
“Demand for services has gone up, but we’re rising to the challenge,” noted Wekesa. “Our infrastructure is finally catching up with the needs of our community.”
Digital Systems Lead the Way
Mama Lucy has integrated smart health platforms, enabling better patient tracking and faster response times. Features include:
-
A custom patient portal that stores critical medical history
-
Operational tools that support Social Health Authority (SHA) systems
-
Streamlined billing and administration through digital dashboards
These digital systems reduce paperwork, improve service speed, and empower clinicians with up-to-date medical data.
From Overlooked to Outstanding
Located in a densely populated part of Nairobi, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital was once overwhelmed by limited resources and infrastructure gaps. Today, thanks to focused leadership and government support, it is setting new benchmarks in public health innovation and care delivery.
As CEO Wekesa puts it:
“We’re not just serving patients—we’re restoring trust in public healthcare.”
