The Jubilee Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has appointed former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as its Deputy Party Leader and endorsed him as the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, signaling a renewed push by the former ruling party to reassert its political presence ahead of the next general election.
Speaking after the NEC meeting, Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni said the decision reflected members’ confidence in Matiang’i’s leadership record and his ability to steer the country forward.
“Dr Matiang’i has consistently demonstrated integrity, dedication, and results-oriented leadership,” Kioni said. “The party believes he embodies the vision and values of Jubilee and is best positioned to offer Kenya a unifying and development-focused alternative in 2027.”
Kioni, however, clarified that the endorsement marks the party’s internal nomination and not necessarily the final choice for any coalition arrangement that may emerge ahead of the election.
“We have chosen our own candidate. Whether there will be broader opposition negotiations is a matter for future discussion, but for now, Jubilee stands firmly behind Dr Matiang’i,” he noted.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Fred Matiang’i expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the confidence placed in him and pledged to focus on national unity, service delivery, and institutional reform.
“I am deeply honored by this endorsement,” he said. “Kenya deserves a government that delivers one that listens to the people, strengthens public institutions, and creates opportunities for every citizen. That will be the foundation of my campaign.”
He also emphasized his commitment to collaboration with like-minded leaders to build a stronger, more inclusive political coalition.
“Ours will not be a politics of division,” Matiang’i added. “We will reach out, we will listen, and we will work together for a better Kenya.”
Party officials from across the country praised the move, describing it as a fresh start for Jubilee.
Kerubo Momanyi, a women’s representative on the NEC, said the endorsement reflects the party’s renewed focus on professionalism and integrity in governance.
“Matiang’i represents discipline, efficiency, and accountability qualities Kenyans are yearning for in leadership,” she said.
This comes amid renewed efforts by Jubilee to revitalize its grassroots structures and re-engage with supporters nationwide. The move will position the party strategically within the opposition landscape ahead of possible coalition talks before 2027
