Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has called on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to safeguard the United Opposition’s vision, warning that disunity could cost the coalition dearly in the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Friday, February 6, 2026, during the funeral of the mother of former Murang’a gubernatorial candidate Jamleck Kamau in Kigumo, Onyonka appealed to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader not to derail the opposition alliance’s aspirations. He stressed the importance of unity among the united opposition principals, urging them to work together.
“Please, Mheshimiwa Gachagua, don’t kill our dream. Keep yourselves together. Carry Matiang’i with you, carry Martha Karua with you, and carry Justin Muturi with you. We are waiting for you to tell us where we are going, because if all of you do not do that, you will be hanged separately by William Ruto as we watch from outside the tent,” Onyonka said.
The senator noted that the opposition’s strength lies in collective action, cautioning that fragmentation would only benefit their main rival, President William Ruto. He affirmed that members of the United Opposition must rally behind their leaders and maintain solidarity ahead of the next polls.
His remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the opposition to consolidate under a new banner, the United Alternative Government, a rebrand spearheaded by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The coalition is currently strategizing for the 2027 elections, seeking to present a unified front against the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration’s candidate, President William Ruto.
However, internal tensions have recently surfaced within the opposition ranks, with reports of disagreements between Gachagua and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who also leads the Jubilee Party.
The wrangles have raised concerns about the coalition’s cohesion as it prepares for the upcoming 2027 political contest.
