Sister Caroline Kanjiru, a Catholic nun who is the prime suspect in the murder of fellow nun Anselimina Karimi, is set to remain in police custody for the next 14 days.
In a ruling issued on Tuesday, October 14, the nun’s detainment is to allow police to conduct investigations as they aim to get to the bottom of the alleged brutal murder of Sister Karimi.
The suspect had been arraigned in court with her lawyer aiming to have her released on a cash bail or bond, while police contended that she be held, terming her a flight risk.
Police officer Abdul Tulla told the court that Sister Caroline, who appeared in court on a miscellaneous mention, is a flight risk.
The court heard that the nun earlier said the deceased, whom she took to Nkubu Hospital, had died on her way there, yet investigations show she had bruised hands and legs that could mean otherwise.
Tulla asked the court to keep her in custody for 14 days to investigate the incident further.
Sister Caroline’s lawyer, however, argued that she should be released on a bond as she cannot run away and will appear before the court when needed.
Before her demise, she had been the administrator of Meru Children’s Home in Nkabune, located on the outskirts of Meru town.
Her death coincided with the suspect’s transfer to the facility, where she was set to take over from Sister Karimi.
