Embu Governor Mbarire Accuses Gachagua of Orchestrating Chaos and Intimidation Plot

Tensions in Kenya’s political landscape escalated sharply this week after Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire launched a scathing attack against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of intimidation, political coercion, and orchestrating violence in her county.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday evening, Governor Mbarire alleged that Gachagua, in collaboration with certain Embu politicians, was attempting to destabilize her administration and manipulate the region’s political direction.
“Rigathi Gachagua, you are not God! I am not afraid of you,” declared Mbarire. Her comments were triggered by the violent demonstrations that rocked Embu on June 25, which she claimed led to the looting of businesses and the destruction of property in Embu town.
According to Mbarire, reliable intelligence linked the chaos to organized criminal gangs allegedly funded by Gachagua to cause unrest and undermine her leadership.
The governor accused the former Deputy President of using political intimidation tactics, including threats and violence, to force her into aligning with his political agenda. “You cannot claim to love Embu and at the same time fund thugs to destroy it,” Mbarire stated emphatically. She further warned that she would no longer remain silent in the face of political bullying.
Mbarire also pointed a finger at Manyatta MP John Gitonga, accusing him of collaborating with Gachagua to destabilise Embu County for selfish political purposes. According to her, Gitonga is being used as a pawn in a larger scheme to challenge President William Ruto’s government and sow division within the ruling coalition.
These explosive claims come amid mounting pressure from other pro-government lawmakers who are also pointing fingers at Gachagua. Led by Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, the group accused the former DP of financing chaos in Nairobi’s Central Business District during the June 25 protests. Barasa and his colleagues have demanded Gachagua’s arrest, claiming he is attempting to incite rebellion and overthrow the current administration.
As the political drama unfolds, Kenyans watch closely, questioning whether the accusations will spark deeper investigations or further widen the rift within the ruling camp.
