Kenya Gears Up for Africa Sitting Volleyball Showdown as World Cup Slots Hang in the Balance

Nairobi is set to host one of the most eagerly awaited events on the para-sport calendar, the Africa Zone Sitting Volleyball Championship, from July 1 to 10, 2025. With the continent’s top teams converging in the capital, Kenya is not only preparing to deliver a world-class event but also aiming for glory on the court.

The championship serves as the official qualifier for the 2025 Sitting Volleyball World Cup in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Only the top two teams per gender will advance to the global stage, making the stakes exceptionally high. Beyond that, a berth in the 2026 World Championships in Hangzhou, China, awaits successful teams, further raising the tournament’s profile.

The draw has thrown up intriguing matchups. Kenya’s women’s team finds itself in a tight three-team group alongside regional rivals Rwanda and continental powerhouse Nigeria. Meanwhile, the men’s competition is split into two groups. Kenya, Rwanda, and Algeria face off in Group A, while Group B features Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa.

The host nation will kick off its men’s campaign against Algeria, and the women will begin their journey against Nigeria. Both encounters are expected to be intense, as Kenya seeks to assert its presence early.

Federation Chairperson Doris Atieno, who is spearheading preparations, has been supervising intense training sessions at the Kasarani Indoor Gymnasium. A provisional squad of 30 players, 15 men and 15 women, is currently in camp, to be trimmed to 14 per team as per World ParaVolley regulations.

“The goal is not just to host a successful championship, but to qualify for the World Cup and make our mark globally,” Atieno stated confidently.
