Cleophas Malala

Cleophas Malala, Deputy Leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has cautioned against attempt to arrest former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua upon his return from the United States on Thursday.

Malala warned that this could trigger public demonstrations and overshadow Kenya’s ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.

In a radio interview on August 18, Malala said detaining Gachagua—particularly at the airport—would likely spark unrest that could disrupt activities around the Harambee Stars’ upcoming quarter-final match. He warned that even major transport routes such as Thika Road could be affected, making it difficult for fans to access Kasarani Stadium.

His remarks come amid growing tension following Gachagua’s recent claims linking senior state officials to meetings with foreign armed groups.

In response, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen urged Gachagua to present himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) once he returns to the country.

Malala, however, downplayed talk of an airport arrest, arguing that if authorities wish to question the former DP, it should be done through institutions such as Parliament or other formal legal channels.

Observers note that the handling of Gachagua’s return will be closely watched, especially as Kenya hosts international sporting events that draw significant global attention.
