A criminal suspect accosted while allegedly armed with a toy gun, preparing to rob members of the public in Kariobangi, Nairobi, is facing charges of possession of an imitation of a firearm contrary to section 34 of the Firearm Act.

Joshua Ambanga alias Monia was arrested in the Darfur area by officers on patrol who found him in dark alleys within the Darfur area, where they suspected he was waylaying pedestrians and allegedly recovered the fake pistol from him on August 9 at 7 pm.

Monia is also facing charges of preparation to commit a felony contrary to section 308 (1) of the Penal Code.

“On August 9, 2025, at the Darfur area in Kariobangi within Nairobi, you were found armed with a dangerous weapon, namely an imitation firearm (toy gun) in circumstances that indicated that you were so armed with intent to commit a felony, namely robbery,” the charges read in part.

Monia was also charged with being in possession of narcotics contrary to section 3 (1) as read with section 3(2) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act of 2022 after he was found with bhang at the time of his arrest.

In the charge, the accused person is charged with having 10 rolls of bhang with a street value of Sh100, which were not in their medicinal preparation and use form.

He denied all the charges before Chief Magistrate Beatrice Kimemia of the Makadara law courts.

The court ordered a pre-bail report from the Department of Probation and Aftercare Services to assist in setting bail and bond terms for the suspect. The matter will be mentioned on August 26.

The police officers had seen Monia, who had masked his face and was suspected of being him. They apprehended him and searched him instantly, where they allegedly recovered the items and arrested him.
