Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, will be laid to rest at his Bondo home on Sunday, 19 October, according to his wish that he be buried within 72 hours after his demise.

A State Funeral Committee, chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and co-chaired by Oburu Oginga, the late Odinga’s brother, announced that the burial will be preceded by a public viewing both in Nairobi and Kisumu.

President William Ruto will Thursday at 8:30 a.m. receive the body at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), after which it will be moved to Lee Funeral Home.

At midday, the body will be taken to Parliament Buildings for public viewing.

On Friday, a memorial service will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium, after which the body will be moved to his Karen residence for an overnight stay.

On Saturday morning, the body will be flown to Kisumu for public viewing from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., before being transported by road to his Bondo home, where it will lie overnight.

The burial will take place on Sunday, according to Anglican Church rites.

A high-level delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on board Kenya Airways, departed for India, where he died of a heart attack on Wednesday, October 15, at 9.52 am.

The Indian government is facilitating the repatriation process.

1:00 am – The plane touches down in Mumbai, India.

3:00 am – The Kenyan delegation leaves for Nairobi.

8:30 am – The President and members of the family to receive the body at JKIA, proceed to Lee Funeral Home.

12:00 pm – 5:00 pm – The body will lie in state at Parliament buildings in the Nairobi CBD for public viewing. There will also be public grieving places where Kenyans can watch the proceedings across the country.

5:00 pm – Raila’s body returns to Lee Funeral Home.

Friday

8am: State funeral at Nyayo Stadium.

Later, the body will be taken to his Karen Residence for an overnight vigil.

Saturday

Body leaves Nairobi for Kisumu for public viewing. Later, the body travels by road from Kisumu to Bondo for an overnight stay.

Burial

Odinga collapsed during a morning walk on Wednesday, October 15, according to an official at the Sreedhariyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Center in Koothattukulam.

Speaking to the media outside the hospital on Wednesday, Dr Alphons SABS, a cardiologist Devamantha Hospital, Raila had a history of diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, right lower limb deep vein thrombosis, for which he had an inferior vena cava filter, and a recent thin subdural hematoma.
