President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to nurturing youth talent and expanding opportunities through sports and the creative economy.

Speaking during the English Premier League trophy presentation at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto said his government is investing heavily in sports academies and community facilities to build a strong foundation for future champions.

“Sports is not just about competition, it is about empowerment, unity, and national pride,” he said.

The President celebrated Kenya’s rich football heritage, recalling icons such as the late Joe Kadenge, Victor Wanyama, and McDonald Mariga, the first Kenyan to win the UEFA Champions League. He praised these players for inspiring generations and proving that Kenyan talent belongs on the global stage.

Ruto noted that football holds a special place in the hearts of Kenyans, describing the country as “a football-crazy nation.”

“Kenyans don’t just watch the Premier League but they live it, breathe it, and argue about it every weekend as if they own the clubs themselves,” he said. “Whether you are red, blue, or sky blue, whether you support Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, or Manchester City — you can feel the energy across our towns, estates, and villages every match day.”

The Head of State invited Kenyans to join in celebrating the historic visit of the Premier League trophy as it begins its Kenyan tour during the Guinness Matchday Weekend. He urged fans to share in the joy of the beautiful game and the spirit of collaboration that made the event possible.

“The trophy’s visit reminds us that Kenya’s love for football is boundless,” Ruto said. “And with teamwork, resilience, and purpose, greatness is always within reach.”
