Former President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta marked his 64th birthday today, drawing warm tributes from leaders, friends, and Kenyans across the political divide who fondly recalled his decade-long presidency and continued influence in shaping the country’s political and economic discourse.
Unlike in previous years, the celebration was low-key, with close family and friends said to have joined the former Head of State at his Nairobi residence for a private gathering. Sources close to the family revealed that Mr. Kenyatta spent much of the day with his wife Margaret Kenyatta, children, and grandchildren — a setting he now cherishes since stepping back from active politics.
Born on October 21, 1961, Uhuru Kenyatta — the son of Kenya’s founding President Jomo Kenyatta — served as Kenya’s fourth President from 2013 to 2022. His tenure was defined by massive infrastructure expansion, digital transformation, and the rollout of universal health and education programs.
Messages of goodwill poured in online, with hashtags like #HappyBirthdayUhuru and #UhuruAt64 trending for most of the day. Many described him as a leader who championed national unity during turbulent times and laid the foundation for Kenya’s modernization.

Others praised his post-presidency diplomacy efforts, particularly his peace missions across the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa, where he continues to represent the country in regional stability efforts.
Political analysts noted that despite his withdrawal from the public limelight, Mr. Kenyatta remains an influential figure, particularly in discussions around governance, peace, and the economy.
“Uhuru’s legacy continues to shape Kenya’s political landscape,” said Dr. Wanjiru Gikonyo, a governance expert. “His approach to leadership—calm, calculated, and diplomatic—still resonates with many Kenyans.”
The former president’s supporters also used the day to celebrate his achievements — including the Standard Gauge Railway, expansion of electricity access, and the strengthening of Kenya’s digital economy.
As he turns 64, Mr. Kenyatta’s focus appears to be on family, philanthropy, and regional diplomacy. His foundation, the Uhuru Kenyatta Foundation, continues to support youth empowerment, education, and climate initiatives.
For many Kenyans, Uhuru’s birthday is not just a personal milestone but also a reflection of an era that defined a generation.
