Why Your Next Favourite Drink Might Be Tequila

Discover the Smooth, Sophisticated Side of a Spirit Too Often Misunderstood
By Kingkline Ojal, Brand Ambassador, Diageo Reserve Brands
Tequila is often misunderstood — reduced to a party shot and paired with salt and lemon to “make it go down.” But as someone deeply passionate about quality spirits, I’m here to tell you: that version of tequila isn’t the full story. In fact, it barely scratches the surface.
In Kenya’s social circles, I frequently encounter misconceptions about tequila. Most people believe it’s inherently harsh, and understandably so — what they’ve experienced are likely mixto tequilas. By law, these only need to contain 51% agave, with the rest made up of sugars and additives. The result? A sharper, less refined taste that leads many to believe tequila needs to be masked or chased.
But premium tequila is an entirely different story.
Crafted from 100% blue agave, these tequilas are smooth, rich, and complex. They offer a depth of flavour that is meant to be sipped and savoured, not slammed. One of my personal favourites is Casamigos, a brand known for its commitment to using only 100% blue agave. The smoothness and balance it offers — whether sipped neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail — showcase what true tequila should taste like.
Let’s debunk one major myth right now: Tequila doesn’t have to be harsh. That roughness comes from lower-quality mixto varieties. The classic salt-and-lemon routine wasn’t born out of tradition — it was a workaround to make bad tequila tolerable. Premium tequila needs no such assistance. It shines on its own.
Take Casamigos Blanco, for example — crisp, clean, and perfect in a Margarita or Paloma. Its natural agave notes bring life to cocktails without overpowering them. And when enjoyed on its own, it offers layers of flavour that unfold on the palate — hints of citrus, vanilla, and spice — a far cry from the throat-burning stereotypes.
What excites me most is introducing more people to this refined experience. I’ve watched minds change and palates evolve the moment someone tastes a 100% blue agave tequila for the first time. The surprise on their face is always the same: “Wait — this is tequila?”
So here’s my call to action: Don’t let old perceptions shape your experience. Explore tequila the way it was meant to be enjoyed — slowly, thoughtfully, and with appreciation for the craftsmanship behind it. It’s not just a drink; it’s a heritage spirit, rooted in tradition and elevated through meticulous artistry.
Your next favourite drink might just be tequila. And not because it gets the party started, but because it’s smooth, complex, and worthy of your time.
Cheers to discovering the real tequila.
