The government has deployed a strategic vaccination program to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic which rages globally.
Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the strategic vaccination program is one of the promising measures the government has undertaken in the fight against the deadly virus.
“The current COVID-19 pandemic supply chain is constrained occasionally by vaccine, nationalism and limited production capacity,” he pointed out.
Kagwe said the facility has been able to deliver 38 million dozes out of the projected delivery of 2 billion.
He spoke to journalists during his fact finding tour of the Revital Health Care [EPZ] Ltd in Kilifi county.
The CS said there is a clear pointer of increased demand which has left Kenya and most of the continent in a disadvantaged position.
Kagwe said there is need for local production and manufacturing in addressing the capacity and challenges facing the health sector.
He said the government has vowed to support local production capacity despite little focus on it.
“The government lacks the capacity of producing items used to contain the spread of the virus which include personal protective equipment (PPE),” he added.
In his welcome remarks, Revital Health Care [EPZ] Ltd Chief Executive Officer [CEO] cum chairman Rajnikant Vora assured the government they will work together in the manufacturing process.
He disclosed that they are the largest medical devices factory within the continent with a certificate to export.
“The company has total of 500 employees,” he pointed out.
