Promoting the Advancement of Women in Kenyan Politics 2022
With the shared agenda of advancing the participation of Women in Kenyan Politics, The Mechanisms to promote the Advancement of Women [MePAW] and Mzalendo Trust in partnership with the Ministry of Public Service, Gender, Senior Citizens Affairs and Special Programs under the the Common Women Agenda [COWA] and affiliate partners held a high-level stakeholder meeting on Tuesday 2nd November 2021.
The main aim of the event was to unpack the roadmap to achievement of the two-thirds gender rule in the upcoming elections, highlight on media engagement for equal representation and review women’s preparedness for the 2022 political process.
The event, dubbed, Promoting the Advancement of Women in Kenyan Politics 2022 was opened by Chief Administrative Secretaries from the Ministry of Gender, Hon. Beatrice Elachi and Hon. Jebii Kilimo followed by Keynote speeches from UNWOMEN Country Director, Anne Mutavati, NGEC Chairperson Dr Joyce Mutinda and Chief Administrative Secretary from the Ministry, Hon. Rachel Shebesh.
The first high-level panel consisted of Sen. Beth Mugo and Hon. Denitah Ghati who joined virtually as well as the Deputy Majority Whip Sen. Farhiya Ali, Nairobi Women Rep. MP Hon. Esther Passaris, Migori Women Rep. MP Dr. Pamela Odhiambo and seasoned leader, Amb. Mary Khimulu. Moderated by NGEC Commissioner, Hon. Priscilla Nyokabi, the focus of the conversation was what needs to be done to achieve the two-thirds gender rule by women on the one side, and duty bearers on the other.
The second youth-led panel was moderated by MePAW Program Director, Ms. Olive Gachara and joining her were Rosemary Odinga an Economic Empowerment Specialist at the Ministry of Gender, Aspiring Women Rep. Anita Mbae, Senior TV Producer and Director at Royal Media Services Joan Njaro, Policy Analyst Suzanne Silantoi, Diversity and Inclusion Practitioner Wanja Maina and Mzalendo Trust Executive Director, Caroline Gaita. As a build up to the Cost of Politics in Kenya, Uganda and Ghana survey read by Femke Lee from the Netherlands Institute of Multiparty Democracy and the Women in politics media Engagement Forum Report outlined by Olive Gachara, the conversation focused on what women – especially young female politicians can do to engage the media better, build their political brands and manage their campaign processes.
