Over borrowing is a big challenge facing the country’s economy which is major threat to the working environment in the country.
Outspoken Central Organization of Trade Union [COTU] Secretary General Francis Atwoli said he is concerned with the government’s over borrowing
which has led to escalating debts in the country ahead of the August elections.
He pointed out the government’s over borrowing has forced the prices of essential commodities to sky-rocket ahead of the polls.
“The government move has made life miserable to employees ahead of the polls,” he pointed out.
Atwoli urged the government to come up with policies which can make commodities affordable to the low income employee.
He spoke during a two day Employers Annual Conference 2022 held at Sarova Whitesands beach hotel in Mombasa county. Labour Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui presided over the opening ceremony.
The COTU spokesperson cited the cost of electricity as being unbearable.
Atwoli regretted the cost of doing business in the country is high despite the outgoing administration of President Uhuru Kenyatta being still in charge.
He added the cost of living is still unbearable and out of reach of the ordinary citizen.
“Climate is the biggest challenge and I wonder where the country is going due to over borrowing which is the elephant in the room,”he pointed out.
